The Gospel for the Feast of Martha, Mary and Lazarus is taken from Luke 10th chapter 38:42. Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet, listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. The Lord said to her in reply, martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.

There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part. It will not be taken from her. One of the main teachings of Jesus is that we all should become servants, and he elevates the role of servant to one of the highest levels that we can achieve as a spiritual being. But this reminds us that there’s something even more important than that, and that is the rooted and groundedness that we have to have in the presence of God within us. Foreign Father, we are called to be servants and caregivers.

And sometimes we believe that the thing that we’re offering to people is just ourselves. It’s our care, it’s our love. But you teach us that it’s not just us, it’s God in us, working with us. Bless us with that constant awareness that we are more than just ourselves. We are instruments, messengers, servants of you. And that is what makes us successful.

And we ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
